Wabah Crater

Wabah Crater
The crater was supposedly formed by one of the last big meteorites hitting earth. No idea of the size, but it's big, and well worth a visit.

Directions (from Jeddah)

  • Sorry, I don't recall for sure, but you do get on to the Riyadh motorway after going through Taif.

Tips

  • If you're only going to the crater, leaving midday Thursday provides plenty of time. But if you intend to see the fort as well, then leaving early Thursday morning is better.

  • On both trips everyone seemed to suffer from flat tyres. Make sure you have at least one spare in good working order, and that you can change the tyre.

  • Don't forget the travel letter, and remember the checkpoint at the bottom of the Taif escarpment.

  • You will be in the middle of nowhere, so take plenty of water and make sure others know where you're going.

the 4x4s congregate in the fort the locals had never been known for their recycling skills the fort the fort
the fort bugger!!! - that's the end of our trip to the crater and so the five of us were left behind time to make camp, as we are going nowhere tonight
flat tyre or not, it's still a good bed 1 car goes ahead for help, and a slow trip out for the other 2 and we totally bugger the tyre, the wheel, the trim, the brakes.... but at least some retain their composure
in the middle of nowhere, a pickup truck arrives and the slow journey home
